Who is Loro Piana?
The Italian Stallions, Loro Piana: Brothers Pier Luigi (Left) and Sergio (Right). Sergio Loro Piana passed away in December 2013.
Starting out as wool merchants in the 1800s, The Loro Piana company was formally founded in 1924 by Pietro Loro Piana. Ever since, Loro Piana has been recognized as one of the world’s leading manufacturers of luxury fabrics; from ultra fine cashmere and merino wool to the most exceptional shirting fabrics in very high thread counts. Since the 1980s, Loro Piana has also distinguished itself as a manufacturer of its own brand of clothing and accessories.
Today, Loro Piana rightfully takes its place alongside some of the most exclusive luxury brands in many of the world’s high-end shopping districts, from Rodeo Drive to Milan’s Golden Triangle, while maintaining its strong Italian heritage.
With Loro Piana’s origins as a wool merchant and their commitment to quality and luxury, it seems fitting that since the year 2000, Loro Piana has awarded an annual prize to the Australian or New Zealand farmer who supplies them with the finest bale of wool, from which it produces a mere 50 suits. Last year, it was an Australian farm in Victoria, Pyrenees Park, that took out the prize with a 100kg bale made up of fibres of just 11 microns, or one millionth of a metre in diameter. To put in context, a human hair is, on average, 100 microns.

Why Choose Loro Piana fabric?
For Philippe Perzi Vienna, the decision to make our latest shirts from Loro Piana fabric was an incredibly easy one; Quite simply, Loro Piana stands for timeless elegance and has never expressed a desire to enter into the ‘fashion’ arena by blindly following trends and fads; Loro Piana know their customers are more sensitive to quality and good taste than fashion.
Staying à la mode comes through their Research and Development and Loro Piana’s renowned exacting standards both in the selection of raw materials and in the production of their shirting fabrics.
Loro Piana are so committed to selecting only the highest quality, that all fibres are carefully and extensively controlled to reach the highest levels of fineness and quality; fibres are magnified up to 34,000 times in order to ensure purity and proper standards of thickness, fineness and length; some 450 readings are taken for every batch and only if a batch passes inspection will it go on for further checks.
What Loro Piana does very well is produce fabrics and clothing that are imbued with Italian elegance and maintain their refined style and unmatched comfort for a lifetime. The Philippe Perzi Vienna philosophy is all about quality, classic masculine tailoring, sophistication, individuality and attention to detail. So for us, Loro Piana is the perfect match.
Loro Piana; on shirts, luxury and dressing well
A family affair: Brothers, Sergio and Pier Luigi Loro Piana (Left); and Father and son, Philippe and Johann Perzi (Right).
Pier Luigi Loro Piana says he sizes up men by their shirts, taking into account the thickness of the buttons and the firmness of the collar. “The quality of clothing tells you so much of what you need to know about a person.”
In choosing his own shirts, Mr. Loro Piana says that first and foremost, he pays particularly close attention to the fabric quality, button thickness and then the cut of the shirt. For Mr. Loro Piana, removable collar stays are not negotiable, as the sewn-in ones crumple over time. At Philippe Perzi Vienna, we couldn’t agree more. The quality of our shirt fabrics is second to none as we only use the best. All our shirts have removable collar stays, thick mother-of-pearl buttons and what we consider to be the most beautiful collars in the market, using fusible lining from Wendler of Switzerland, which prevents shrinkage and wrinkling of both collars and cuffs. Pier Luigi Loro Piana, won’t be drawn on who his customers are, except to say that they are “very demanding and sophisticated men.” According to Mr Pier Luigi Loro Piana “luxury is quality with no compromise. It’s not the price, but the innate value of something.”
Philippe Perzi Vienna loves bright colour and flamboyance every now and then, but we also realise the beauty of restrained elegance, and this is where we admire Loro Piana’s philosophy. Pier Luigi and Sergio Loro Piana (prior to his passing a year ago) epitomise Italian sophistication and echo what their customers value. It was said of Sergio Loro Piana that he “had an instinctive elegance of a man who gave careful thought to what he was going to wear and then, once dressed, forgot about his clothes, achieving an ease and naturalness that those men for whom each day is a fashion parade will never achieve.”
Remember, a simple but high-quality white or blue dress shirt sends a savvy message. It says you’re a discerning gentleman with style and elegance who is ready for whatever the world throws at him and isn’t begging for attention.
